It Started as a Bad Habit
I’ll be honest—this probably isn’t the healthiest habit.
Playing Sudoku right before bed sounded like a good idea at first. Something calm, quiet, and screen-light compared to scrolling social media. I thought it would help me relax and fall asleep faster.
But… that’s not exactly how it turned out.
Instead of making me sleepy, it made me just focused enough to stay awake longer than I should.
“One Last Puzzle” Never Means One
Every night, I tell myself the same thing:
“Okay, just one puzzle, then sleep.”
And every night, I lie to myself.
The first puzzle is easy. It warms up my brain. I finish it quickly and feel good.
Then I think, “That was too quick. One more.”
The second one is a bit harder. I slow down, concentrate more. Now I’m invested.
And by the time I get to the third, I’m fully awake again.
So much for sleeping early.
The Calm Before the Mental Storm
What I do love, though, is how Sudoku changes my mood at night.
After a long day, my mind is usually all over the place—random thoughts, unfinished tasks, things I forgot to do.
But once I start playing, all of that fades.
It’s like my brain narrows down to one simple task: fill the grid, follow the logic, find the missing numbers.
For a while, everything feels quiet.
The Dangerous Part: Getting Stuck
Of course, there’s a catch.
If I get stuck on a puzzle, it’s game over for my sleep schedule.
I can’t just leave it unfinished. Especially if I’m close. That “almost done” feeling is way too tempting.
So I stay.
I stare at the grid, re-check everything, try different angles. Minutes pass. Sometimes a lot of minutes.
And suddenly, I’m wide awake again.
That Late-Night Breakthrough Feeling
But I have to admit—there’s something special about solving a puzzle late at night.
Maybe it’s the quiet. Maybe it’s the lack of distractions.
But when I finally figure out a tricky Sudoku before bed, the satisfaction hits differently.
It feels calmer. More personal.
Like a quiet win to end the day.
A Weird Kind of Relaxation
Even though it keeps me up sometimes, I still find Sudoku relaxing.
Not in a sleepy way—but in a focused way.
It helps me disconnect from everything else. No stress, no noise, no pressure. Just logic and patience.
And honestly, that’s sometimes exactly what I need before going to sleep.
The Little Routine I Didn’t Plan
At this point, playing Sudoku at night has become a routine.
I don’t always plan it. It just happens.
Some nights I play one quick puzzle and stop. Other nights… not so much.
But either way, it’s become a small part of how I wind down.
What I’ve Learned (The Hard Way)
After many late nights, I’ve realized a few things:
Easy Puzzles Only (If I Want to Sleep)
If I pick a hard one, I’m not sleeping anytime soon.
Set a Limit (And Actually Follow It)
Still working on this one…
Accept That It’s Okay to Leave a Puzzle Unfinished
This is the hardest lesson. But sometimes, it’s necessary.
Why I Still Keep Doing It
Even knowing it can mess with my sleep, I still go back to Sudoku at night.
Because it gives me something rare—a moment of quiet focus before the day ends.
No distractions. No pressure.
Just me and a grid of numbers.
Final Thoughts
So yeah, maybe playing Sudoku before bed isn’t the best habit… but it’s definitely one of the most enjoyable.
